Violence and Sex
Although you might think that scenes of violence and graphic sex are essential ingredients in any form of entertainment nowadays, you certainly don’t have to include them in your historical novel, any more than you have to lard your dialogue with ‘four-letter’ words. If they belong in your story, and if you have the desire and the ability to write them effectively, then do so. To include gratuitous violence and blow-by-blow sexual encounters simply because you think it may make your book more saleable is to court disaster. Not only will such passages clearly appear to have been imposed on a story that does not demand them, and not only will they ring false unless you are truly committed to write them and enjoy doing so, but also you will not be aiming at the major market for historical novels, which, apart from bodice-rippers, tends to avoid anything which might be construed as obscene or over-bloodthirsty.
